PACC: Preparing for Overnight Stays

How to Prep Your Camper for an Overnight Stay

Preparing for your child’s first overnight stay—whether it’s a short one-night experience or a full week of camp—can bring up a lot of questions. But with the right mindset and preparation, it can be a positive growth opportunity for everyone involved. Here’s a simple guide to help you and your camper feel ready and supported.

Start by talking about the overnight stay well in advance. Let your camper know where they’ll be sleeping, what kind of activities to expect, and who will be there. Answer their questions honestly while keeping a confident and calm tone. Kids often take emotional cues from the adults around them, so your reassurance goes a long way.

Make packing a collaborative experience. Choose comfort items—like a small stuffed animal, favorite pajamas, or a book they love—and help your camper understand how to manage their own belongings. Label everything clearly and make a simple checklist together so they feel prepared and organized.

In the days leading up to the stay, practice independence skills like brushing teeth, picking out clothes, and asking for help from other adults. These small steps build confidence for longer stays, like summer camp.

Overnight stays are steppingstones to greater independence. With intentional preparation and thoughtful reflection, they can be a joyful milestone—not just for your camper, but for your whole family.
