Traditional Programs

4boys.jpg (13908 bytes)Overview

Our traditional camping programs, the Pioneers and the Mountaineers, are designed to offer a well balanced program of activities to suit the interests of any young person. Both programs follow the same standard daily format, yet each program is unique in its own way.

Pioneers

The Pioneers program (one-week sessions) is aimed at younger campers and recognizes the fact that coming to camp might seem like a "venture into the unknown." By taking into account these special concerns, the Pioneers program serves as a wonderful introduction to the exciting world of summer camp.

Mountaineers

The Mountaineers program (two- week sessions) offers the best "all round" camping experience for most children. The combination of a traditional daily schedule and special weekend activities combine to create fun, excitement and memorable experiences that will have a profound impact on any young persons life. With either program, the camping experience can be a special time of growth, adventure and development.

Traditional Daily Schedule

Each morning campers participate in instructional activity periods. When possible, campers are grouped by skill level and/or age in order to make the activity as challenging and developmental as possible. Activity goals include: making the activity interesting and fun for the camper; helping the camper develop and refine skills in the activity area; and encouraging the camper to set goals and challenge themselves. Standard morning activity selections include: Aquatic Activities: Swim Lessons, Springboard Diving, Canoeing, Kayaking Sports: Western Riding, Archery, Riflery, Tennis, Adventure Cycling, Soccer, Volleyball Arts and Crafts: Pottery, Wood working, Leather working, Drama, Basket making, Pioneer Crafts Nature Activities: Nature Adventure, Nature Crafts & Lore In addition to the traditional offering of standard activities, the talents and interests of the staff are drawn upon to offer new and unique activities each year.

trad_tubes.jpg (8930 bytes)Afternoons provide the opportunity for the cabin group to play and work together in the natural beauty of our beautiful mountain setting. Afternoon cabin activities might include: a hike to a special location at camp such as Rainbow Falls or "Pretty Place; a free swim in Lake Rotary; working together to complete the requirements for "Cabin of Excellence"; a division trip with other cabins to Sliding Rock, Pisgah Forest or Stone's Lake; developing team work via the Group Challenge and/or High Ropes; playing sports such as soccer or softball; or any of a dozen other fun and exciting group building activities. Afternoon schedules are planned by the cabin counselors and really focus on giving the cabin group the chance to enjoy each other and cultivate friendships that will last a lifetime.

Evening Programs
trad_guys.jpg (10356 bytes)Evening programs provide opportunities for fun, new experiences and inspiration. Some evenings revolve around special theme nights: International Night where our counselors from different countries share their culture through games and activities or Italian Night where the dining hall becomes a fine Italian restaurant and counselors serve as entertainers, waiters and waitresses. Some nights focus on the individual camper, allowing them to choose an activity of special interest to them or try something new. Other nights bring the entire camp together as one large family: cabin talent shows; group games like Capture the Flag or Revenuers & Moonshiners; or fun filled campfires with songs, skits, sharing and special memories. Finally, the last part of each camper's day is spent in the cabin just before lights out. This time is used for capers and counselors to go over the days events or discuss topics of interest. Inspirational vespers help put closure to the end of each campers day and adds a very special meaning to camp for everyone.

bulletWeekends
For campers staying more than one week, our fun-filled weekend programs help bring everyone together for programs and activities that include everyone. Each weekend revolves around a distinctive theme - staff work hard to create a unique blend of themes that draw on poplar ones of the past and combine new and innovative ones as well. On Sunday mornings, non- denominational worship services are held at the camp chapel - "Pretty Place"; services include guest speakers sharing inspirational thoughts, songs and skits by cabin groups, and special readings.
