The Outback

Philosophy

The program focuses on the needs of adolescents. In school and amongst peers, adolescents face a growing number of challenges and decisions. The Outback program provides a community atmosphere which promotes the development of leadership skills, self confidence and responsible decision making. Campers have the opportunity to test themselves through a series of outdoor challenges including rock climbing, whitewater, high ropes, a five day backpack trip, community service and an overnight solo. Outback engages campers to take ownership of their program an enjoy the responsibility of preparing meals, maintaining equipment and making on the trail decisions. The staff is dedicated to bringing forward the potential of each individual camper and fostering personal growth through positive role modeling , listening skills, enthusiasm and their experience working with adolescents. The result is a fun and memorable experience which lasts well into the school year.

Outback Community

ob_river.jpg (16271 bytes)Constructed by campers, the cabins, kitchen and bath house provide a rustic base for campers between trips. Tucked away from the rest of camp, outbacker's prepare their own meals, tend to the garden, plan trips, work on building projects and have time to talk about important issues without many modern conveniences, including electricity. Counselors and campers form a family in which each member supports and depends upon others. The community offers returning and new campers a unique experience to make lasting friendships.

Trips

ob_raft.jpg (16452 bytes)More than half the Outback program occurs in the wilderness surrounding YMCA Camp Greenville. Campers will have the opportunity to work with experienced leaders, develop outdoor skills and enjoy the challenges of activities such as a five-day backpacking trip, rock climbing and white-water canoeing. Counselors become teachers and friends while exercising the highest levels of safety possible. Outbackers gain personal confidence, trust, new skills and respect while having fun swimming, hiking, paddling and climbing.

The Result

The Outback experience creates lasting friendships, memories, improved self-awareness and the opportunity to be a valuable member of a community. Outackers learn to work past differences, challenge themselves, lead others and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. The results of the program can be seen in any of the campers as they walk away with pride, determination and a vision of new frontiers in which to challenge themselves.
